Maternity Reflexology

Reflexology is a deeply relaxing and calming therapy, which is non-invasive and safe throughout pregnancy.  It is effective, and greatly improves general wellbeing.  Treatments help the body adjust to the huge emotional and physical changes being experienced, as well as preparing itself for labour and birth.

Reflexology has proven to be beneficial in maintaining the body’s natural balance during pregnancy, as well as helping to ease and relieve common conditions and ailments, these may include;

  • morning sickness and nausea
  • heartburn and indigestion
  • headaches
  • aches, pain & discomfort
  • stress & anxiety
  • fatigue
  • backache and pelvic girdle pain
  • constipation

Preparation for birth

It is helpful to have regular Reflexology treatments throughout pregnancy. In perparation for birth, treatments can be once or twice weekly post 37 weeks Anecdotal evidence is vast, but recent studies have shown that Reflexology;

  • Significantly reduced pain during labour.
  • Reduced the length of the first stage of labour.

Reflexology also shortened the second stage for women with low back pain and pelvic girdle pain when given 6 x weekly treatments. (Ref: https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/29024881)

Although Reflexology certainly cannot induce labour, it may encourage nature to take its course. One of the many benefits of regular reflexology is restoring balance, especially of the endocrine system. Stress hormones nearer the due date may delay the onset of labour; reflexology helps to alleviate these stresses and anxieties and promotes a more relaxed and calm state in which the body can prepare itself for birth naturally.

Post-Natal Reflexology

Post-natal self-care is hugely important for physical and emotional well-being, and recovery. Post-natal Reflexology is balancing, harmonising and revitalising, and treatments following the birth encourage the body to return to its non-pregnant state.

As well as promoting a deep sense of relaxation and calm, Reflexology may also help to alleviate many post-natal ailments. These include muscle aches and pains, back ache, stiffness, lactation problems, breast engorgement, stress, anxiety and depression.
